When the heat comes on in the fall, indoor air dries out fast. You notice it first as a scratchy throat in the morning, static shocks from the doorknob, or lips that stay chapped no matter what you do. Wood floors creak more. Houseplants brown at the tips. A humidifier fixes most of that, and a good one costs less than a nice dinner out.

Why indoor humidity matters

Most health and building guides suggest keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. Below 30, skin, eyes, and nasal passages dry out, and many people sleep worse. Above 50 to 60 percent, condensation shows up on windows and dust mites and mold get a foothold. The goal is not to make the room damp. It is to stop it from feeling like a desert.

Warm mist or cool mist?

Empty the tank every day and let it air dry if you can. Do not top off old water. Every third day, which is what the EPA advises for portable units, unplug it, empty the tank, and scrub off any scale or film with a soft brush, then wipe it dry.
