Some people can sleep through a thunderstorm. Most of us wake up when a car door slams at 2 a.m., a partner starts snoring, or the upstairs neighbor gets home late. The noise itself is often not that loud. What wakes you is the change: a sudden sound that stands out against a quiet room.

A sound machine works by filling that silence with a steady, even sound. When the background is always a little bit loud, a door slam or a dog bark does not jump out as much. The idea is not to drown the world out. It is to smooth it over so your brain has less reason to wake you.

White, pink, brown: what the colors mean

You will see noise described by color on almost every sound machine. The names describe how the sound energy is spread between low and high pitches.

White noise has equal energy across all frequencies. It sounds like a hiss, similar to an untuned radio. It masks a wide range of sounds well, but some people find it a bit sharp.

Pink noise tilts toward the lower frequencies. It sounds softer, closer to steady rain or wind through trees. Many people find it easier to fall asleep to.

Brown noise leans even further into the low end. It has a deep rumble, a bit like a waterfall or the inside of an airplane cabin. It has gained a following for sleep and for focus, especially among people who find white noise too bright.

Beyond the colors, most machines also offer fan sounds, ocean waves, rain, and other nature tracks. There is no single right sound. The best one is the one you stop noticing after a few minutes.

Fan-based versus digital machines

There are two main ways a sound machine makes noise. The classic design uses a real fan spinning inside a housing, so the sound is produced by moving air, but the air stays inside the machine. The other design uses a speaker to play recorded or synthesized sounds.

Fan-based machines have a very natural, even sound, and there is nothing to loop. They usually offer fewer options, often just a tone and volume adjustment. Digital machines offer dozens of sounds, timers, and night lights, and many are small enough to travel with.

If you pick a digital model, look for the phrase "non-looping." Cheaper machines may play a short recording on repeat. Some people never notice, but others start to hear the loop point, and once you hear it, you cannot unhear it.

Portable and travel machines

Hotels and rentals are where a sound machine earns its keep. Ice machines, elevators, hallway chatter, and an unfamiliar air conditioner can make the first night away rough. A small battery-powered machine gives you the same sound you hear at home, which also helps your brain recognize that it is time to sleep.

Hatch Baby Sleep Support Sound Machine and Night Light

Kohl's sells the Hatch Baby sleep support machine, another nursery option that pairs sounds with a night light. You can customize both to keep a steady bedtime routine and control them remotely from the companion app, which also includes baby sleep guides.

Volume matters more with babies than with adults. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that some infant sleep machines can produce hazardous noise levels. Its advice for parents who use one is to place it as far from the baby's head as possible and use it for a short time only. In practice that means keeping the machine across the room, not in or on the crib, and turning the volume down to the lowest level that still helps. Many machines, including this one, can go much louder than a nursery needs, so start low.

What to check before you buy

Start with power. A plug-in machine never runs out mid-night, but it needs an outlet near the bed. A rechargeable model can go anywhere, including a corner of the nursery away from the crib or a hotel nightstand without a free outlet, but you have to remember to charge it.

Next, look at lights. Night lights are handy for feeding a baby or finding your way to the bathroom, but a bright glow can make it harder to fall asleep. Check that any light can be dimmed or turned off completely, and that the display or buttons do not glow all night.

Finally, think about controls. Large physical buttons are easy to find in the dark. App control is useful for nurseries, but it adds a phone to the bedtime routine. A memory function that keeps your settings saves you from starting over every night.

Getting the most out of a sound machine

Place the machine between you and the noise you want to block. If the problem is a hallway or a street, put it near the door or window rather than right next to your pillow. For most adults, the sound only needs to be loud enough to blur the background, not loud enough to hear clearly from across the house.

Give yourself a few nights to adjust. A new sound can feel strange at first, and many people find they stop noticing it within a week. If you share a bed, agree on a sound and volume together. Some couples settle on a soft brown noise that both can live with.

Use the timer if you only need help falling asleep, or leave it running if you wake easily in the early morning. And if you find you cannot sleep without it, keep a small portable model in your travel bag so a trip does not undo the habit.

Which one to pick

If you want a simple, natural sound and do not need options, a fan-based machine is hard to beat. If you like to experiment with sounds or want a timer and night light, choose a non-looping digital model. Frequent travelers should pick a small rechargeable machine, and parents should put volume control and placement ahead of the number of lullabies. Whichever you choose, the goal is the same: a room where the small noises of the night fade into the background.

Does brown noise work better than white noise for blocking street traffic, or is it just personal preference?
