Beat the Overweight Bag Fee: Choosing and Using a Luggage Scale

The worst place to find out your suitcase is too heavy is at the check-in counter, with a line behind you. You end up kneeling on the airport floor, moving shoes and a jacket into your carry-on, or paying a fee that can cost more than the bag itself. A luggage scale costs less than a meal at the airport and takes the guessing out of packing.

Weight limits and fees vary by airline, route, and ticket type, so always check your own booking. As an example, American Airlines lists a standard checked bag allowance of 50 pounds (23 kg) and 62 total inches (158 cm) in size for most regions. Some premium cabins allow up to 70 pounds (32 kg) for free bags.

Going over costs money. For flights between the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada, American's overweight fee is $30 for a bag over 50 and up to 53 pounds, $100 for a bag over 53 and up to 70 pounds, and $200 for a bag over 70 and up to 100 pounds. It does not accept checked bags over 100 pounds on flights it operates. Those three extra pounds between 50 and 53 are exactly where a scale pays for itself: a few items moved at home can save you a fee at the airport.

Carry-on bags have their own rules. Many U.S. airlines do not set a weight limit for carry-ons, but many international and budget carriers do and some of those limits are strict. Check before you fly, especially on a connecting flight with a different airline.

Size counts too

Weight is only half of the rule. Airlines also limit how big a checked bag can be, usually measured as total linear inches: length plus width plus height, measured on the outside of the bag. American's standard limit is 62 inches (158 cm), and it says it does not accept checked bags over 115 inches (292 cm) in total dimensions. Oversize fees are separate from overweight fees, so one bag can get both.

If your suitcase is on the large side, measure it once at home with a tape measure and write the total on a luggage tag. Some manual scales include a built-in tape measure for exactly this reason.

How to weigh a bag correctly

Lift slowly and hold the bag still, clear of the floor. Swinging or jerking the bag throws off the reading. With a data-lock scale, wait for the number to freeze, then set the bag down.

Weigh it twice. If the two readings are close, you can trust them. If you are within a pound or two of the limit, remember that airline scales and yours may not match exactly, so leave a little room.

Weigh as you pack, not just at the end. Weigh the empty suitcase first, since some large hard-shell bags use up a big part of the limit on their own.
