Packing lunch saves money, gives you more control over what you eat, and skips the midday scramble for takeout. But it only works if the food is still good when you open it. Warm yogurt, soggy sandwiches, and a container that leaked all over the bag are how good lunch habits die.

If there is a refrigerator at work or school, put your lunch in it when you arrive, and leave the bag open so the cold air can reach the food.

Keep hot food hot

For soup, chili, pasta, or leftovers, an insulated food jar is the tool you need. The USDA suggests filling the container with boiling water, letting it stand for a few minutes, then emptying it and adding the piping hot food. Keep it closed until lunch so the food stays at 140 degrees F or above.

Insulation. Look for a foam layer between the outside fabric and the lining. Thicker foam holds temperature longer. Makers often list how many hours a bag keeps food cool, but those numbers depend on conditions, so still pack ice packs.

Lining. A wipeable, leakproof lining, often PEVA, makes cleanup easy when something spills.

Size. Measure your containers before you buy. A bag that is too small forces you to stack things awkwardly, and a bag that is too big leaves room for things to shift and leak.

Pockets and straps. Outside pockets are handy for utensils, napkins, and keys. A shoulder strap helps if you commute on foot or by train.

Bento boxes for kids

Kids often eat better when they can see everything at once. Bento-style boxes divide food into compartments so crackers do not get soggy and dips stay put. They also help with portion sizes.

Prepare food the night before, but pack the bag right before you leave. The USDA suggests freezing sandwiches to help them stay cold, but leave off mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomatoes until the morning for better texture.

Pack only what you will eat at lunch. The USDA recommends throwing away perishable leftovers and used packaging after lunch rather than bringing them home to eat later.

Some foods do not need a cold source at all, including whole fruits and vegetables, hard cheese, crackers, bread, peanut butter, and chips. These are easy additions that fill out a lunch without adding risk.

Keep the bag clean

Wipe the lining with warm soapy water after each use and let the bag air dry with the zipper open. Wash ice packs and containers every day.
