You spend about a third of your life in bed, so sheets are worth a little thought. The right set feels good against your skin, suits the way you sleep, fits your mattress without popping off the corners, and holds up to years of washing.

Shopping for sheets can be confusing, though. Labels talk about thread count, percale, sateen, microfiber, bamboo, and deep pockets, and prices range widely. This guide explains what those terms mean, how to choose based on whether you sleep hot or cold, and how to care for sheets so they last, with sets from several stores.

Weaves: percale vs. sateen

Percale

Percale is a simple one-over, one-under weave. It feels crisp, cool, and matte, a bit like a well-pressed cotton shirt. Percale breathes well, which makes it a favorite for hot sleepers and warm climates. It can wrinkle more easily and often gets softer with each wash.

Sateen

Sateen uses a weave with more threads on the surface, which gives it a smooth, silky feel and a soft sheen. It drapes nicely and feels a bit warmer than percale. Sateen tends to wrinkle less but can snag or pill more over time.

For cotton, a range of about 200 to 400 for percale and 300 to 600 for sateen is a sensible target. Fiber quality and weave matter more than a big number on the package. Microfiber sheets often use a different numbering system, such as a series number, so it is not directly comparable to cotton thread count.

Getting the fit right

Measure your mattress depth, including any topper, before you buy. Standard fitted sheets usually fit mattresses up to about 12 to 14 inches deep, while deep-pocket sheets fit mattresses up to 16 inches or more. A fitted sheet with elastic all the way around stays on better than one with elastic only at the corners.
