A sunrise alarm clock brightens gradually before your alarm, so the first thing you notice is light rather than a buzzer. The ten here run from Philips's classic wake-up light and two Lumie Bodyclocks to Hatch's app-driven Restores and a spread of full-screen budget clocks.

Half the picks link to Amazon; the rest link to Target, Walmart and Lumie's own store, and every rating names its source. We make no health claims about light therapy - these are clocks, judged as clocks.

Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light HF3520/60

Best Overall
Philips SmartSleep wake-up light HF3520/60

Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light HF3520/60

Philips's classic wake-up light - the long-running benchmark, on Amazon.

  • Sunrise and sunset simulation
  • Five alarm tones, FM radio
  • Retains clock and alarm settings up to 8 hours, per Philips
  • No app needed

The HF3520 has been Wirecutter's top sunrise-clock pick since 2018: a red-tinted dawn that grows to bright white, a sunset mode, five alarm tones, FM radio and a power backup that preserves the clock and alarm settings for up to eight hours, per the Philips manual. The tradeoffs are real too - no companion app, and programming on the device itself is awkward.

Wirecutter's reviewer reports nearly four years of daily use without a failure, and owner threads echo the longevity - one owner reports 14 years, another three. Not every unit is perfect: other owners describe a clicking fault, the light cutting out at alarm time, and two replacements that played radio instead of the chosen sound. Individual reports, but on the record.

JALL Full-Screen Sunrise Alarm Clock

2
JALL sunrise alarm clock with full-screen wake-up light

JALL Full-Screen Sunrise Alarm Clock

A full-screen sunrise clock that covers the basics, on Amazon.

  • Warm-tinted full-screen sunrise
  • Two programmable alarms
  • 8 alarm and 25 sleep sounds
  • FM radio

The JALL is Wirecutter's budget pick: nearly as bright as its top picks but a bit smaller, with two programmable alarms, a warm-tinted sunrise, eight alarm sounds, 25 sleep sounds and FM radio. Tom's Guide's tester found the buttons easy to use without the manual; note that an upgraded version with Bluetooth exists, so check the listing title before buying.

Owner experience is thin but pointed. One owner says her JALL replaced a five-year-old Philips, while passing on word that other owners' units stopped after a year or two - secondhand, not her experience. Another wishes the light stayed on after the alarm is dismissed. Treat durability as an open question.

Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300

3
Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 wake-up light

Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300

A bright, button-controlled sunrise clock with radio, sold direct by Lumie.

  • 15 to 90-minute sunrise and sunset
  • 15 sounds, FM radio
  • Tap-control snooze
  • 3-year warranty

The Shine 300 is the pick for a genuinely bright dawn. Wired's reviewer prefers it over the Hatch Restore 2 for waking up precisely because it gets brighter, while calling the Hatch better for falling asleep. Tom's Guide's three-week test found it stylish and effective, with excellent sunrise and sunset simulation, 15 sounds and FM radio - and found changing settings time-consuming.

Owners add one consistent caveat: the screen lights up during the sunrise and can't be fully turned off or capped - one March 2026 owner resorted to dimming tape, and another confirmed the behavior. We link Lumie's own store, which listed it as available when our researcher checked.

Lumie Bodyclock Glow 150

4
Lumie Bodyclock Glow 150 wake-up light

Lumie Bodyclock Glow 150

Lumie's simpler premium clock with button controls, sold direct.

  • 20, 30 or 45-minute sunrise and sunset
  • 10 sounds, tap snooze
  • Buttons, no app
  • 3-year warranty

The Glow 150 is Lumie's simpler premium clock: a 20, 30 or 45-minute sunrise and sunset, 10 sounds, tap snooze and button controls instead of an app, backed by a three-year warranty. Tom's Guide calls it a premium sunrise clock and dings only the basic sleep sounds; a Guardian reviewer who has tested more than a dozen models calls it the best he has used after two weeks with it.

We link Lumie's own store because the original retail listing would not load for us; Lumie's page showed it in stock, with a brand-site rating of 4.2 from 76 reviews - a pool Lumie says includes five sampled or promotional reviewers, so treat it accordingly.

Hatch Restore 3 in Cocoa

5
Hatch Restore 3 sunrise alarm clock, Cocoa

Hatch Restore 3 in Cocoa

Hatch's app-driven sunrise clock and sound machine, at Target.

  • Dozens of alarm light colors
  • Large sound and meditation library
  • Textured fabric cover
  • Buttons work after app setup

The Restore 3 is Wirecutter's other top pick: as bright as the Philips, with dozens of alarm light colors and a large library of soundscapes, podcasts and meditations. The catches: setup requires the Hatch Sleep app, and the full library needs a Hatch+ subscription.

Owner reports are mixed. One BIFL poster loved waking to the light but hit glitchy white noise around day 40 - and the replacement had the same fault. Others complain that features sit behind the subscription. Target shows 4.01 stars, with the count not displayed.

Hatch Restore 2

6
Hatch Restore 2 sunrise alarm clock and sound machine

Hatch Restore 2

The previous-generation Hatch Restore, on Amazon.

  • App-driven sunrise and sounds
  • Fabric-covered design
  • Previous Hatch generation

The Restore 2 is the previous generation: the same app-driven idea with a smaller feature set. Retailer pools look solid on paper - 4.5 stars from 104 reviews at Best Buy and 4.02 from over 2,300 at Target - though we could not read the review text behind them.

Owner threads flag firmware trouble: sound previews failing after an update, auto shut-off misbehaving, one unit bricked mid-update. One owner says theirs has been solid, so the record cuts both ways. Wirecutter's Restore 3 praise does not transfer to this model.

hOmeLabs Sunrise Alarm Clock

7
hOmeLabs sunrise alarm clock

hOmeLabs Sunrise Alarm Clock

A budget-friendly full-screen sunrise clock, on Amazon.

  • Colored light options
  • Nature sounds, FM radio
  • 1-year warranty

Tom's Guide calls the hOmeLabs an excellent budget sunrise clock for kids and adults: colored light options, FM radio, nature sounds and a one-year warranty. The same review is clear on the tradeoffs - the light is not as bright as pricier models, and the sound quality is not great.

What we don't have, said plainly: owner threads for this exact model. The score rests on the professional test and the spec sheet.

HOM Smart Sunrise Alarm Clock

8
HOM smart sunrise alarm clock

HOM Smart Sunrise Alarm Clock

A smart-home sunrise clock with voice-assistant support, at Target.

  • Alexa and Google Home support
  • 7 sounds, 7 colors per maker
  • FM radio

The HOM is the smart-home play: Alexa and Google Home support, FM radio, and a manufacturer's list of seven sounds and seven full-screen colors.

What we don't have, said plainly: no professional test and no owner thread for this model. Target shows 4 out of 5 stars without a visible count. The score reflects the feature list, with the unknowns stated here rather than hidden in it.

Loftie Alarm Clock

9
Loftie smart alarm clock with night light and sound machine

Loftie Alarm Clock

A design-first alarm clock with a two-phase alarm, on Amazon.

  • Two-phase alarm
  • Large soundscape library
  • Design-forward build
  • Needs Wi-Fi for updates

The Loftie is the design object of the group. Wired's 2023 review praises its looks, large soundscape library and two-phase alarm that nudges you, then insists nine minutes later. The same review notes it costs a lot for an alarm clock, that some features need a Loftie+ membership, and that it needs Wi-Fi for updates.

Owner reports are the concern: sound loss, connectivity trouble, nightly firmware redownloads and a replacement with glitchy audio all appear in the threads. Some of those posts concern the newer Loftie 2, a sibling model, so they do not all land on this one - and one two-year owner with insomnia swears by theirs.

Heimvision A80S Wake Up Light

10
Heimvision A80S wake-up light, white

Heimvision A80S Wake Up Light

A Wi-Fi sunrise clock that works with Alexa, at Walmart.

  • Wi-Fi and Alexa support
  • Sunrise simulation
  • App-controlled

The Heimvision A80S is a Wi-Fi sunrise clock with Alexa support and app control, on paper competitive with app-driven models.

The owner record is the warning: multiple exact-model threads describe confusing or failed app pairing, with manuals referencing outdated menu names; one owner never connected at all. The retail page showed a single 5-star review and conflicting availability signals when checked. Buy it only if you enjoy troubleshooting.

Before you buy

Decide whether you want a simple light-and-alarm clock or a smart device. Hatch products rely on an app, and some features sit behind a subscription. Check sunrise duration, brightness, sound options and the plug type for your region.

We research products; we do not lab-test them. Where a listing has too few ratings to judge (HOM, Heimvision), the card says so plainly.
